6. The state in the transition. The two key ideological contributions to the antistate positions advocated by a number of contemporary opponents of capitalism are various historical currents of anarchist thought (which Marx and Engels argued against directly in their time), and various currents of anti- Stalinist socialist thought. The general antistate position of the former is well known. The latter, whose best-known Marxist-influenced advocate is John Holloway (2002), draws similar negative conclusions about the state from the experience of its use to defend the privileges of a minority in Stalinist societies.

A smaller subset of these revolutionaries would argue that the Stalinist USSR should not be considered an experiment in a transition to the socialism of Marx and Engels, and that its ultimate failure has little to teach us about the possibilities of such a transition. Regardless of one’s position on the USSR, the discussions around socialism of the twenty-first century necessarily re-confront, although in a new historical context, a number of the historical debates related to this issue of self-emancipation.
